Practical urban planning for winter cycling; lessons from a Swedish pilot study

A detailed understanding of how the weather affects cycling is lacking. Where research has been carried out, focus often on temperate and hotter climates; little out regarding in colder climate communities. This study therefore investigated lived experience winter-season to provide empirical data for planning winter cold-climate Between 1 December 2017 30 April 2018, activities 13 cyclists (eight female five male, mean age 42 years, range 11–74 years) Luleå, Sweden, were surveyed. Methods: Structured questionnaires, individual travel diaries, recorded outdoor temperature, precipitation type, snow cover used. 1) Cycle level frequency could be maintained during season; 2) winter, participants more likely use their bicycles commuting than other activities, 3) electric helped significantly; 4) quality infrastructure critical making attractive. For successful, town planners need consider as a specific activity with its own design, policy management requirements. shown that year-round can achieved communities, all attendant potential health benefits.
